Smart example of innovation - THE GREAT management guru Peter Drucker once said that innovation is the specific tool of entrepreneurs, the means by which they exploit change as an opportunity for a different business or a different service. He believed that it was capable of being presented as a discipline, capable of being learned and capable of being practised. More importantly, entrepreneurs needed to search purposefully for the sources of innovation, the changes and their symptoms that indicate opportunities for successful innovation, and they needed to know and to apply the principles of successful innovation. Can your firm develop a sustainable edge? John Hagel III, a former McKinsey consultant, and John Seely Brown, former chief scientist of Xerox, are focusing these days on a question that CEOs often ask themselves: How can their companies develop a sustainable competitive edge that can keep them ahead of the competition? Their answer, which they discuss in a new book, involves ideas that enable firms to step up the pace at which they develop new capabilities. Hagel and Brown will speak about these issues at Supernova 2005, a conference of technologists and business leaders to be held in San Francisco later this month. Kevin Werbach, a professor of legal studies at Wharton and Supernova's organizer, spoke with them about sustainable advantage, capability building, process networks and several other themes that will be highlighted at the conference.
